All About CBD: A Beginner’s Guide

Are you curious about CBD and what it can do for you?

You’ve come to the right place, but with so much information out there, it can be hard to know where to start. That’s why I’ve put together this guide – to give you everything you need to know about CBD in one easy-to-understand place.  From what it is and how it works, to its healing potential and how to use it, I’ve got you covered.

So sit back, relax, and let’s dive into the hope that hemp provides!

So what is CBD?

CBD is just one of over 100 natural compounds found in the hemp plant, known as cannabinoids. Another cannabinoid you’re probably familiar with is one called THC, the one that causes a euphoric feeling.

CBD is non-intoxicating, which means it won’t get you high. Most CBD is extracted from the hemp plant which has a high concentration of CBD and a much lower amount of THC. While it’s cousin, the marijuana plant has a high concentration of THC and low in CBD.

Here in the USA the Farm Bill made hemp derived CBD federally legal in all 50 states. You can have full spectrum CBD products with up to .03% THC (which will NOT cause any euphoric/ high feeling).

How does CBD work?

CBD interacts with a complex system in our body called the Endocannabinoid System (ECS), which helps regulate just about everything in our bodies – like our mood, sleep, appetite, immune system, etc.

This system has three main parts: endocannabinoids, receptors, and enzymes.

Endocannabinoids are natural compounds our bodies create that bind to receptors we have ALL over the body, which helps regulate every bodily function we have.

CBD interacts with the ECS by binding to both CB1 and CB2 receptors. When this happens and your ECS is replenished – there can be some amazing effects on the body, such as reducing anxiety and stress, reducing pain and inflammation, improving sleep, and treating conditions like epilepsy and multiple sclerosis. Some of the other conditions that  has been shown to help include chronic pain, anxiety disorders, and depression.

CBD works to promote balance and homeostasis of all the other systems in the body, it doesn’t “treat” symptoms like medications do. It also has anti- addiction properties to it that make it a much safer alternative for most people.

How do you take CBD?

When it comes to taking CBD, there are a lot of different options out there. You will find full or broad spectrum tinctures (CBD oil with dropper) , capsules, gummies, topicals, and more. But the most popular method is using CBD oil aka- tinctures.

These little bottles of magic are taken sublingually, which just means under your tongue.  First off you are going to want to make sure you shake the bottle well before using.  Next, you are going to want to start with (in most cases, this is why I help every customer with dosing) .25ml under your tongue and hold it there for 60-90 seconds before swallowing. This allows the CBD to be absorbed directly into your bloodstream through the membranes in your mouth. It’s like a shortcut, bypassing your digestive system and liver (which is why the typical “gummies” on the market only allow you to absorb 0-7% of the CBD listed on the label).

Dosing CBD

Is often one of the reasons why people give up and/ or claim that “CBD just doesn’t work for me”! It is not a one size fits all approach when it comes to finding your therapeutic dose. When starting CBD, keep in mind that it is not an overnight, quick fix solution for most people.

You are going to want to give it a solid 6+ weeks of consistent use before determining that it’s just “not for me”.  Now don’t freak out on me! – that does NOT mean that it will take that long to see any type of improvement though… Depending what you are trying to achieve, how severe the symptoms, how long you’ve had, etc will all contribute to how long it takes you to find your “sweet spot” dose.  A general rule when it comes to CBD is that you always want to go “Low and “Slow” and keep a journal of some kind to document how you feel at different amounts/ time of day.

All CBD is NOT created equal!

As of today, the CBD industry is still unregulated which leaves WAY too many mislabeled and potentially dangerous products on the market. The last I heard it was over 80% of CBD products were mislabeled , meaning they didn’t have the amount of CBD listed and/or contained other pesticides, heavy metals, etc.

My most important recommendation to look for, is to make sure that the hemp is USDA certified organic.  NOT just “organically grown“,  that means nothing.  Hemp is a “scavenger plant” and is great at sucking up everything around it, in the air and soil…So good in fact that China uses it to clean up their pollution and then sells it to other countries so they can make very inexpensive CBD  and/ or to white label it… GROSS!
